Having been ditched by England, Pietersen is essentially now a freelance cricketer and fully expected to play in the new BBL season which starts in December.
The Stars' chief executive Clint Cooper told cricket.com.au his club had contacted Pietersen's representatives and that discussions were ongoing ahead of the signing window opening later this month.
"We’ve had good, robust discussions with Kevin’s management which is a positive sign moving forward," Cooper said. "But at the moment we’re in the throes of an embargo period so until that finishes, we won’t be doing anything definitive."
Pietersen is currently playing in the Indian Premier League for Delhi Daredevils and is due to return to England upon its conclusion to play for Surrey in the NatWest T20 Blast. He has also signed a deal to play for St Lucia in the Caribbean Premier League this summer.
