Steve Smith (115) and Brad Haddin (75) launched a recovery mission that saw the hosts turn 97/5 into 326 all out after England captain Alastair Cook had chosen to bowl first on a green pitch with overhead conditions also in the bowlers' favour.

England lost Michael Carberry for a duck before stumps, and the tourists are now 7/2 to record a consolation victory in the final Test of the series. The draw is right out to 8/1.

Cook did survive England's late examination, making six not out, and is 3/1 joint favourite with Kevin Pietersen to be England's top batsman in the first innings. Bell - promoted to number three here but now set to bat at four after James Anderson was used as a nightwatchman - is 100/30 with debutant Gary Ballance 5/1 ahead of 8/1 shots Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow.

England's innings runs line is 5/6 either side of 250.5.
