Meaker called up by England

Stuart Meaker has been drafted into England's squad as injury cover for Steven Finn, the England and Wales Cricket Board has announced.

Stuart Meaker: Heading for India

Finn picked up a thigh injury in the second over of his second spell in England's first game of their tour against India A earlier this week.

He is therefore a doubt for their final warm-up match next week, leading to Meaker's call-up.

The Surrey paceman will return to the England Performance Programme once Finn returns to fitness and his arrival date in India is subject to obtaining the necessary visa early next week.

Meaker's inclusion will place question marks on Finn's availability for the first Test against India in Ahmedabad on November 15.

The tall Middlesex fast bowler would have been expecting to be a key component of England's tour of the sub-Continent after impressing in a limited-overs series in India last year.

His absence could leave Graham Onions and Tim Bresnan battling for the final seamer slot alongside James Anderson and Stuart Broad.

Onions was the man to replace Finn in the second warm-up match against Mumbai A, where England closed on 338 for six.

Meaker, though - in Finn's absence - gives England genuine pace, something the remaining seamers on the tour lack.

The South African-born 23-year-old, who has made two one-day international appearances, can regularly clock 90mph and remains the fastest bowler recorded at England's National Cricket Performance Centre at Loughborough.

Meaker said on Twitter on Saturday lunchtime: "Looks like I am heading to India #blimey."
