Worcestershire's hopes of reaching the quarter-finals for the first time since 2007 were on hold after the lunchtime abandonment of their Friends Life t20 meeting with Northamptonshire at New Road.

With the rain-lashed ground unable to cope with another deluge on Friday morning, Worcestershire-based umpire Nigel Cowley was called in early to deliver the inevitable verdict at 1.45pm.

The decision was made soon enough to spare Northamptonshire a wasted journey to Worcester.

One point from a 'no result' keeps Worcestershire in contention in a four-way battle at the top of the Midlands/Wales/West Group but there was frustration at missing an opportunity to go for a win against the county at the bottom of the table.

Chief executive David Leatherdale said: "We've had a lot of rain over the last two or three days. On Wednesday night we had an inch and a half in a hour and a half.

"The forecast for the rest of the day is rain, so it is a sensible decision."

Worcestershire, one of only three counties not to have reached finals day, are now pinning their hopes on the closing group game at home to fellow contenders Somerset on Sunday, weather permitting."

"The forecast is again for showers," added Leatherdale.

"It's difficult to manage cricket in six to eight weeks where the weather has just been poor all the time."
