Afghanistan claimed their first-ever win over a full member nation after beating tournament hosts Bangladesh by 32 runs in the Asia Cup.

A superb sixth-wicket stand of 164 between Asghar Stanikzai (90) and Samiullah Shenwari (81) allowed Afghanistan to recover from a perilous 90 for five to set a testing victory target of 255.

And Bangladesh rarely looked likely to chase that down after seeing both openers out with only one run on the board, and then later slumping from 161 for four to 165 for eight - including losing three wickets to successive deliveries.

That collapse meant Bangladesh needed something special from the tail to get their opening win of the tournament but, despite Ziaur Rahman clubbing 41 off 22 balls late on, they fell short, dismissed for 222 in the 48th over as Afghanistan celebrated an historic win.

Mohammad Nabi finished with figures of three for 44 while Shapoor Zadran and Hamid Hassan both took two wickets apiece for the victors. Mominul Haque top-scored for Bangladesh with 50.

Earlier, Afghanistan were indebted to the partnership between Stanikzai and Shenwari to get to their total of 254 for six after being sent in to bat at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah.

Their stand of 164 came off 138 balls, with Stanikzai striking three sixes and six fours in his 103-ball 90 not out and Shenwari collecting 10 fours and a six in his 69-ball 81, before he was run out off the penultimate delivery of the innings.

The result leaves Afghanistan with four points from their two games, while Bangladesh are still looking for their first points after two fixtures.
