The 34-year-old all rounder limited Essex's opponents to 312 all out, taking three wickets for 49 runs on the fourth and final day.

The visitors started the day needing another 199 runs with five wickets remaining, but Napier first bowled out Richard Johnson, who added just 12 to his overnight score of nine, before taking the key wicket of Shivnarine Chanderpaul (52) two overs later.

Picking up with Derbyshire on 165 for five on Wednesday, former West Indies captain Chanderpaul, who was unbeaten on 75 in the first innings, lost his wicket just three balls after reaching his half-century as he was caught by James Foster.

David Wainwright and Tim Groenewald put on a strong eighth-wicket partnership of 89 runs to keep the away side in it before England spinner Monty Panesar claimed the latter's wicket, stumped by wicketkeeper Foster.

Mark Turner (six) was next up at the crease but lasted only 17 balls before he became Napier's third victim, losing out to a catch from Alastair Cook to leave Derbyshire still 63 runs short and with a single wicket remaining.

Mark Footitt joined Wainwright out in the middle but a solitary four was all he could muster before David Masters took the last wicket of the match - his seventh in total - to hand Essex the victory.
