Hopes of a positive outcome were done few favours by rain on the penultimate day at Hove.

And Durham, replying to the hosts' 505 for nine, averted an unlikely defeat by turning their overnight 137 for two into 451 for seven.

Sri Lankan Sangakkara moved from an unbeaten 30 to 159, while Scott Borthwick (84) and captain Paul Collingwood (74) also made significant contributions.

Sangakkara, who will now join up with his national team on their tour of England, had made a less then impressive start to his short spell in the north east with a duck and 14 against Yorkshire last week.

But he showed on Wednesday just why he has scored 11,151 Test runs at 58.07.

Durham had added just seven to their overnight total when Borthwick was the first wicket of the day to fall as James Anyon found an edge and Ben Brown gratefully took the catch.

Michael Richardson was next to go for just 15 as he was snared lbw by Luke Wells but that brought Collingwood to the crease and the skipper and Sangakkara proceeded to put on 144 for the fourth wicket.

Sangakkara brought up his century off 202 balls with 14 fours and Collingwood was not far behind in reaching his 50 as he upped the pace with five fours in seven balls.

The former England man eventually went for 74 off 78 balls as he was caught by Jon Lewis off Ashar Zaidi.

That did not halt Sangakkara's momentum, however, and he put on another 60 with Phil Mustard before being caught by Matt Machan at deep mid-wicket off Steve Magoffin for 159, from 267 balls with 18 fours and two sixes.

His dismissal brought tea and, while Mustard became Magoffin's second victim for 20, Durham finished an agonising two runs short of a fifth batting point in a final session that petered out before the captains shook hands on a draw.

Durham ended the match with 11 points while Sussex claimed 12.
