Essex and Glamorgan had to be content with a draw as the final day of their LV= County Championship clash at Chelmsford was hit badly by rain.

There was no play possible at Chelmsford until just before 3pm, after which there were a potential 46 overs left as Glamorgan resumed 152 ahead on 188 for eight.

Veteran Australian Michael Hogan, 11 overnight, became Tom Moore's fourth wicket of the match when he was caught at deep square leg by Greg Smith, with the total edged up past 200.

Jim Allenby, who started the afternoon on 34, was the last man out, departing for 79 when he was caught by Mark Pettini off New Zealander Jesse Ryder after Glamorgan had reached exactly 250.

That left Essex a run-chase of 215 from a minimum of 24 overs, provided the weather held.

With just 10 on the board, Glamorgan made an early breakthrough when Hogan forced an edge off Pettini (six).

New Zealander Ryder (10) then was caught from a big hit to long-off, again from the bowling of Hogan, to leave Essex at 21 for two before rain stopped play just before 5pm.

Although the players did come back out onto the field after nearly 15 minutes, it was no surprise when the match was eventually called off as a draw, with Essex collecting 10 points and Glamorgan nine.

Tom Westley and Ben Foakes were the unbeaten batsmen on 11 and one respectively, with Essex 28 for two from six overs.

Essex paceman Reece Topley was the pick of the bowlers, having returned match figures of 10 for 108.
