The Sydney Sixers clinched a semi-final berth in the KFC Big Bash with a two-run victory over the Melbourne Renegades, who are now out of contention for a top-four finish.

Moises Henriques top-scored with 55 as the Sixers - who are now level with second-placed Perth Scorchers on 10 points in the battle for a home game in the knockout stages - made 151-6.

The understrength Renegades fought hard throughout their run chase but without internationals Aaron Finch and Jos Buttler, ended up falling just short.

Dan Harris (20) and Michael Hill (35) gave Melbourne a solid start but despite Alex Doolan also contributing 19, they lost wickets at regular intervals to check their progress.

It meant much rested on the shoulders of Dwayne Bravo, who followed up his 1-23 with the ball by hitting two sixes and a four to reach 38.

However his departure, caught by a back-pedalling Nathan Lyon off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood, put the Sixers firmly in command. Brett Lee restricted the Renegades in the final over, despite Ben Rohrer (28 not out) hitting the last ball of the match for six.

Sydney had earlier built a competitive total around Henriques' half-century, the all-rounder hitting seven fours and a six during his 38-ball knock.

Skipper Stephen Smith made 25 while Marcus North hit an unbeaten 30 from 21 deliveries, though the Sixers were only able to manage 12 runs from the final two overs.

The result means the Renegades can no longer finish the group stages in the top four. They will end their season with a fixture against Adelaide Strikers.
