Batting first in Delhi, the Indians racked up 202 for six in their 20 overs, thanks to some huge hitting late in the innings.
Glenn Maxwell smashed 37 from just 14 balls, while Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik also plundered late runs to add to Dwayne Smith's earlier 44.
For a long period in the reply, Rajasthan looked on course for a successful chase but once wickets began to fall they were unable to keep uo with the rate.
Sanju Samson (65) and Ajinkya Rahane (60) put on 109 for the second wicket, during which time victory looked possible.
They needed 48 from the final four overs but at that point Harbhajan Singh struck with three wickets in the 17th over to swing the match Mumbai's way. Harbhajan finished with four for 32 from his four overs.
The wickets continued to tumble after that as the Royals were eventually dismissed for 169.
The late dismissals included that of Rahul Dravid, batting down at number eight. The 41-year-old, playing the final match of his career, made just one.
