Royal Challengers Bangalore win by 24 runs

Royal Challengers Bangalore kept their IPL playoff hopes alive after beating Chennai Super Kings by 24 runs in an eight-over slog.

  • Virat Kohli: Set up RCB win with a whirlwind 56 not out
  • Chris Gayle: Smashed three successive sixes

Needing at least two points from the game to have any chance of securing a top four slot, the hosts' hopes looked set to be wiped out by the weather.

However, to the relief of the RCB players and crowd the rain finally abated at the Chinnaswamy Stadium and the match was reduced to eight overs a side.

After being put in, RCB smashed their way to 106-2 with skipper Virat Kohli the star of the show after blasting 56 not out from just 29 balls. His innings included four sixes and six fours.

Kohli shared an opening stand of 67 with Chris Gayle, who launched three successive sixes off fellow West Indian Jason Holder before holing out to Mike Hussey having made 28 off 13 balls.

In reply, the Super Kings, who have already qualified for the playoffs, were quickly reduced to 11-2 as Zaheer Khan removed Hussey (6) and Suresh Raina (0) in successive balls.

That left them well behind and although Murali Vijay and MS Dhoni produced some lusty blows the visitors never threatened to chase the total down.

They ended on 82-5 with Khan finishing with 4-17 after taking a sharp caught and bowled chance to remove Ravindra Jadeja off the final ball.

The victory took RCB to 18 points and level with the Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, Sunrisers have one more game to play - against Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday - and a victory would send them through and knock RCB out.
