Gayle's knock was also the fastest-ever T20 century - he reached three figures off just 30 balls while batting for the Banglore Royal Challengers against Pune Warriors.
In his 66-ball innings, Gayle smashed 17 sixes - again the most ever - and 13 fours.
Former Australia right-hander Andrew Symonds previously held the record for the quickest Twenty20 century when he reached three figures for Kent against Middlesex in 2004.
Brendon McCullum held the previous record for highest individual score, set when he made 158 from 73 balls during the 2008 IPL.
Gayle's century - his fourth in the IPL - also helped the Royal Challengers to the highest Twenty20 score, posting 264 for three, to beat Sri Lanka's 260 for six against Kenya in 2007.
Gayle told ITV Sport: "I'm lost for words. It was just one of those days. It's a good wicket and I started well. I got a good total. I can't say it's a decent total - it's a good total."
Bangalore went on to win the game by 130 runs with Pune ending on 133 for nine from their 20 overs with Gayle taking two for five in the reply.
