Manish Pandey top-scored with 66 to help the struggling Warriors post 170-4 in Ranchi, a total their opponents couldn't surpass despite Yusuf Pathan's best efforts.
Pathan slammed 72 from 44 deliveries, including two sixes and eight fours, before he was given out obstructing the field after kicking the ball away.
His dismissal led to Kolkata losing their way in the closing overs, wasting a 98-run stand between Pathan and Essex all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate (42) for the fourth wicket.
Parnell had put the Knight Riders in early trouble by dismissing Manvinder Bisla and his fellow South African, Jacques Kallis.
As well as Pandey, Aaron Finch was also in the runs for Pune; the Australian belted three sixes as well as two fours in his 48 at the top of the order.
Yuvraj Singh weighed in with 30, including three sixes, having put on 65 for the third wicket with Pandey, who played a crucial role before being run out.
