Title holders and Champions League winners the Sydney Sixers overcame their city rivals Sydney Thunder by seven wickets in their Big Bash League opener.

Sydney Sixers v Sydney Thunder

Captain Brad Haddin steered the Sixers to victory as they made 147-3 in their response to the Thunder's 143-5 at the SCG.

It was far from a sell-out in Sydney for the champions' home opener of the tournament, which must be a concern to organisers who expected a full house.

Ryan Carters was the only batsman to offer any real resistance for the Thunder as they batted first, as he made 33 while the next best was Sean Abbott's 24 not out and 23 from skipper Chris Rogers.

Mitchell Starc and Luke Feldman grabbed two wickets each, while Brett Lee went for 0-35 from his four overs, and it could have been a lot worse for the Thunder but for a late rally.

Wicketkeeper Carters and Abbott put on 52 between them in double-quick time, with Abbott's 24 coming off 14 balls but despite that the target of 144 to win still looked a few runs short.

The response from the Sixers started badly as Australian opener David Warner, a big-name transfer from the Thunder, continued his bad run of form with a second-ball duck for his new team.

Haddin and Nic Maddinson put on 53 for the second wicket though before Maddinson was bowled by Chris Tremain, who also removed Warner, for a spritely 39.

The skipper and vice-captain Steve Smith then combined though for a match-winning partnership of 80, although they could not get the job done completely as Haddin was bowled by Abbott for a fine 59.
