South Africa's openers showed Pakistan how it was done at the Wanderers this afternoon, reaching 73 for none at tea to extend their overall lead to 277 after skittling the tourists for a record-low Test score of 49 earlier today.

Captain Graeme Smith struck seven fours in his 41 not out, with Alviro Petersen unbeaten on 27 as the Proteas pressed home their advantage in Johannesburg.

With the hosts having posted 253 on day one of the first Test yesterday - all-rounder Jacques Kallis the only player to reach the fifty mark - Pakistan looked to be heading into day two with the upper hand.

But Dale Steyn ripped through the Pakistan battling line-up today, finishing with amazing figures of six for eight from 8.1 overs. Azhar Ali (13) and captain Misbah-ul-Haq (12) were the only visiting batsmen to make double figures.

Smith opted not to enforce the follow-on, meaning the hosts started their second innings with a commanding 204-run lead.

Steyn did not take long to find his rhythm with the new ball, sending Mohammad Hafeez (six) back to the pavilion in just the fourth over of the day by inducing an outside edge which was snapped up by wicketkeeper AB de Villiers.

Fellow opener Nasir Jamshed (two) followed suit with the first ball of Steyn's next over, trapped leg before wicket playing across the line, with Younis Khan (nought) departing - caught at first slip by Smith - five balls later.

That left the tourists reeling on 12 for three and, although Ali and Misbah then shared a 24-run stand which turned out to be by far the most productive partnership of the Pakistan innings, the former's dismissal only served to speed up an incredible collapse.

Ali edged a Kallis delivery to De Villiers and Misbah perished in similar fashion in the all-rounder's next over.

Asad Shafiq (one) was also caught behind, off the bowling of Vernon Philander. Philander doubled his wicket tally two balls later when he had Umar Gul caught by Smith before he could trouble the scorers.

The teams took lunch with Pakistan 40 for seven before Steyn returned to centre-stage to complete the tourists' humiliation, seeing off Saeed Ajmal (one), Sarfraz Ahmed (two) and Rahat Ali (nought) in successive overs.

Junaid Khan finished eight not out.
