Heavy rain prevented proceedings getting under way, with umpires Adrian Holdstock and Shaun George ultimately declaring a no-result at 18:29 local time (16:29 GMT).

The Proteas had announced wicketkeeper-batsman AB de Villiers' promotion to the top of the order alongside the hard-hitting Henry Davids, while fast bowler Kyle Abbott was likely to make his debut.

The Pakistan XI, meanwhile, was set to welcome the return of former captain Shahid Afridi on his 33rd birthday.

The second and final fixture will take place in Centurion on Sunday, after which the sides will meet for five ODIs, starting in Bloemfontein on March 10.
