The last day of the LV= County Championship match between Hampshire and Yorkshire was washed out, leaving only Joe Root to remember the occasion with any affection.

Root: Double century in rain-ruined draw
Root: Double century in rain-ruined draw

Root at least had the satisfaction of scoring a career-best unbeaten 222 as the sides had to be content with a draw, Root's Yorkshire taking seven points and Hampshire six.

Umpires Nigel Cowley and George Sharp called off the match soon after the scheduled lunch break.

Heavy showers had left pools of water on the outfield beyond the pitch covering and there was never any question of play being able to resume.

The first day was lost to rain, the second consisted of 26 overs in which Yorkshire, having been put in, managed 83 for three.

The third lasted long enough for opening batsman Root to compile his mammoth total spread over 270 balls and consisting of 26 fours and three sixes.

Yorkshire, at one stage 108 for six recovered to 350 for nine before new captain Phil Jaques declared.

Hampshire were allowed 12 overs in reply in which Yorkshire loan signing Steve Harmison had trouble locating his length and line, giving away four wides and conceding 25 from his five-over spell.

At the close Hampshire were 39 without loss before rain prevented any proper response.
