South Africa win by 3 runs

  • End of the line

Well that, I'm afraid, is that for England. They have been knocked out of the tournament and can no longer qualify from Group 1. It was a good effort from their batsmen, but although the margin was ultimately very close, they were always right behind the eight-ball in that chase with wickets just disrupting their momentum. • Over 20 - England 193/7 (Bresnan 17, Broad 1)

Bopara departs to the first ball of the over and with him go any lingering England hopes. Bresnan carves a single down to third man, but when Broad can manage only a single off the third delivery the game is up. Bresnan defiantly pulls Steyn for six off ball four and then inside edges down to fine leg for another boundary. Indeed, he plunders another six off the final ball meaning England fall only three runs short! But his efforts were always going to be in vain as South Africa claim a crucial victory.
  • Bopara c Miller b Steyn 31

He had to go big, but Bopara ends up skying the first ball of the final over and David Miller again shows safe hands in the deep - his third catch of the day.
  • Over 19 - England 175/6 (Bopara 31, Bresnan 0)

Jordan threads a low full toss through the off-side field for a boundary off the second ball of the over, but then miscues an attempted big hit and is caught by de Villiers. Again Bopara just about keeps England hopes alive as he belts a full toss for six and a wide helps as well. But, following a single off the last ball, England will need 22 off Steyn's last over to win.
  • Jordan c de Villiers b Hendricks 16

Jordan's innings comes to an end as he is well caught on the run by de Villiers. The delivery from Hendricks looked to be in the slot, but he just didn't get hold of it.
  • Over 18 - England 163/5 (Bopara 24, Jordan 12)

Bopara offers some more defiance as he blasts Parnell straight back down the ground for four off the penultimate ball of the over and then smashes a full toss through the off side for back-to-back boundaries. That just about keeps them in the hunt, although they still need 34 from the final two overs.
  • Over 17 - England 152/5 (Bopara 15, Jordan 10)

Bopara carves Steyn away high over point for four. A leg bye off the next brings up England's 150 and Steyn then gifts them a wide, but Bopara's strike proves the sole boundary of the over and England need more at this stage.
  • Over 16 - England 142/5 (Bopara 9, Jordan 7)

Parnell is back with a wide, but keeps things fairly tidy after that until Jordan manages to swing one away over the on-side for a much-needed boundary. There's some pretty agricultural shots being played, but not too much in the way of clean contact!
  • Over 15 - England 133/5 (Bopara 7, Jordan 1)

An faint under-edge from Bopara takes the ball through wicketkeeper de Kock and away for three streaky runs. But the spinner gets his reward shortly afterwards as he sends dangerman Buttler back to the pavilion. Chris Jordan is the new man at the crease, but it's looking pretty bleak for England now.
  • Buttler c Morkel b Tahir 34

Big, big loss for England as Buttler picks out Albie Morkel at point in attempting to switch-hit Tahir. It was painful wicket for South Africa, though, as Morkel dislocated his finger in taking the catch!
  • Over 14 - England 128/4 (Buttler 34, Bopara 3)

Just when they needed it Buttler produces a couple of boundaries as he blasts Hendricks over mid-off and then mid-on in successive balls to lift some of the growing pressure. He is completely bamboozled by a slower-ball bouncer, but responds by carting the left-armer over long-on for a maximum from the final ball. 17 runs from the over, just what they required!
  • Over 13 - England 111/4 (Buttler 20, Bopara 2)

It's now five overs since England hit a boundary and their task has become even more difficult after the departure of Morgan. Decent ball by Tahir and it's a fine over all in all as England's batsmen can deal only in singles again.
  • Morgan c de Kock b Tahir 14

Morgan's rather stuttering knock comes to an end as he tickles one behind into the gloves of de Kock from a skiddy Tahir delivery.
  • Over 12 - England 105/3 (Morgan 14, Buttler 16)

England need to start hitting the accelerator, but Steyn offers them nothing loose on his return. His over yields just six runs with Morgan struggling for fluency at present.
  • Over 11 - England 99/3 (Morgan 10, Buttler 14)

Tahir almost sneaks a quicker one through Buttler's defences, but he just manages to get some bat on it in time and squeezes a well-run two into the vacant mid-wicket area. There's another couple for Buttler, while two singles come from the final two balls of the over.
  • Over 10 - England 92/3 (Morgan 9, Buttler 8)

Decent over from Albie Morkel spoiled only really by a wide. Morgan and Buttler can't get him away to the rope, although the latter comes very close with a cover drive that is just cut off by the sweeper. That aside the England duo can only deal in singles.
  • Over 9 - England 84/3 (Morgan 7, Buttler 3)

After a wide first up, Morgan gives himself room and flays Duminy over extra cover for a well-placed boundary. Both batsmen help themselves to singles before Morgan gets out the reverse paddle - although he can't quite get it past the in-field, only another single.
  • Over 8 - England 75/3 (Morgan 1, Buttler 1)

Superb over from Parnell who claims the prize scalp of Hales and then Ali the very next ball. He comes up with a decent hat-trick delivery as well which Buttler does well to guide away down to third man for a single. Morgan is off the mark with a single to fine leg off the final ball.
  • Ali c de Kock b Parnell 10

It's two in two for Parnell as Ali gets an under-edge behind on an attempted pull, with wicketkeeper de Kock taking an excellent catch low down, diving forward.
  • Hales c Miller b Parnell 38

Big blow for South Africa as Hales departs! The right-hander was looking to blast a lofted drive over the covers for six, but picked out David Miller in the deep and the fielder made no mistake.
