  • England win by 81 runs (D/L)

An emphatic start to the ODI series for England at the Oval as they draw first blood in the five-match battle with plenty to spare. Gary Ballance and Ian Bell set the tone with the bat before some late fireworks from Chris Jordan, who then played his part with the ball with three wickets. Thanks for your company throughout the day, stay here for all reports and reaction.
  • Malinga bld Bopara 10

Bopara wraps up an emphatic England victory by bowling Malinga with a slower ball
  • Over 27:

A couple of front-foot no-balls from Gurney in his comeback over but Sri Lanka could not make the most of the free-hits. Lakmal comes in for the last rites of the Sri Lanka innings
  • Senanayake ct Bell bld Gurney 11

Gurney picks up his second wicket when Senanayake drills the Notts season straight to Bell, who pouches with ease at long-on. England one wicket away...
  • Over 26:

Bopara is back on with his box of tricks but drags a slower ball short and Senanayake sweeps to the fence, despite the best efforts of Anderson, who put in a dive. Drop! Ravi then puts a sharp return catch down at the end of the over. Senanayake hit that hard but Bopara couldn't hang on. Let's hope that didn't hit Ravi's dislocated finger!
  • Over 25:

After roughing Malinga up with three short balls Jordan then aims at the stumps. Malinga telegraphs the full ball, though, and gets enough bat on it to reach the boundary at extra cover. Just those runs off the over
  • Over 24:

Malinga looks like he's going to have some fun out here. He charges Tredwell on a couple of occasions and swings hard and unconvincingly for runs over the cover region. 103 needed from 48 balls. England edging closer
  • Perera ct Root bld Tredwell 2

What was I saying...? Perera swats Tredwell straight to Root, who catches well at long-on. Sri Lanka eight down
  • Over 23:

Drop! Jordan continues to use the short ball really well and, after hitting Perera, he nearly dismisses him next ball. Another top-edge sailed down to third man and Gurney made great ground to get there but just couldn't hold on low to the ground. Perera looks like he's either hitting out, or getting out!
  • Over 22:

Tredwell now has 2-32 from his five overs and England are three wickets away from opening up a 1-0 lead in this five-match series
  • Mathews ct Cook bld Tredwell 18

Cook takes a stunner to remove opposite number Mathews! After reverse-sweeping Tredwell for four earlier in the over, he tried to repeat the dose but got under it too much and Cook ran back and held superbly over his shoulder. Game over?
  • Over 21:

One run conceded and two wickets taken, Jordan has put England on the brink of victory here. He used the short ball very well in that over and surely Mathews and Perera are Sri Lanka's last hopes of pulling off victory
  • Kulasekara ct Buttler 0

The decision to elevate Kulasekara above Perera doesn't pay off as he can only top-edge a Jordan short ball straight up and Buttler walks forward to claim a simple catch
  • Chandimal ct Buttler bld Jordan 8

Chandimal looks to send the ball towards Vauxhall tube station but can only get a faint edge through to Buttler. SL five down
  • Over 20:

The boundaries and singles continue to flow to keep this contest interesting. Mathews cracks a reverse sweep to the boundary after Tredwell had offered up a full toss to bring up the SL 100. Gripping the ball looks tricky with the outfield still very wet. 119 required from 72
  • Over 19:

A required run-rate of nine-an-over is nothing nowadays and with big-hitter Perera still to come Sri Lanka are not out of this yet. Chandimal slogs Bopara through midwicket for four in an over costing nine. 127 required from 78 balls
  • Over 18:

Fair play to Tredwell there, the pressure was growing on the Man of Kent but he picked up the big fish to put England firmly in charge. Chandimal joins Mathews in the middle with Sri Lanka requiring something special
  • Jayawardene ct Morgan bld Tredwell 35

Tredders gets his man! Coming over the wicket, he lures Mahela into a loose flick, which goes straight to Morgan at short midwicket
  • Over 17:

Ravi returns but so too do the boundaries. A loopy full-toss deceives both Mahela and Buttler and the ball misses everyone and trickles for four byes. Jayawardene then shuffles across his stumps and flicks four behind square on the leg-side before adding a single. 140 required from 15 overs. Still a big ask...
  • Over 16:

And so the Mahela masterclass begins... Quite brilliant batting from the Sri Lankan maestro here, reverse paddle-sweeping Tredwell for four and then driving over extra cover for the same result in an over which costs 12. Pressure now firmly on Tredwell...
