Matthew Spriegel and Tom Smith shared a sixth-wicket stand of 126 to steer Surrey to their second Pro40 win of the season against Leicestershire at Grace Road.

Spriegel hit an unbeaten 81 and Smith made 65 as Surrey successfully chased down their victory target of 226 with five balls to spare.

But the win was not enough to lift them off the bottom of the table because of Glamorgan's victory over Derbyshire.

Glamorgan also leapfrogged over Leicestershire who slipped to second bottom.

The home side will be wondering how they failed to clinch their third victory of the season having had Surrey deep in trouble at 98 for five after 19 overs.

They then let things slip as Spriegel and Smith joined forces in a partnership spread across 20 overs and broken only in the penultimate over.

Spriegel made his 81 off 91 balls with just five boundaries while Smith took 61 balls for his 65 and also struck five fours.

Spriegel reached his half-century off 64 balls and Smith went to his 50 off 45 deliveries with the 100 stand coming up in 16 overs.

Smith was eventually bowled by James Benning trying to score the winning runs with a big hit.

But Spriegel ensured victory with a boundary off the first ball of the final over sent down by Harry Gurney.

Leicestershire posted a competitive total of 225 for four due mainly to another sparkling innings from 19-year-old James Taylor.

It has been an extraordinary season for the teenage star, who made an unbeaten 83 off 66 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes.

During the summer Taylor became the youngest Leicestershire player to score 1,000 Championship runs and the youngest ever to make a double century.

He was also named as the Cricket Writers' Club young player of the year.

Taylor and Paul Nixon shared a stand of 86 for the fourth wicket before Nixon retired hurt on 44 having been struck on the calf by a throw from Jason Roy.

Benning hit 47 in an opening stand of 54 with Tom New but it was Taylor's dazzling knock that again caught the eye before Surrey turned the match on its head to snatch victory.
