Nottinghamshire claimed a narrow lead over Yorkshire as they continued their pursuit of LV County Championship leaders Durham in an absorbing day at Trent Bridge.
After bowling out the visitors for 256 in their first innings, Notts reached 301 for seven at the close thanks to half-centuries from Scott Newman and Bilal Shafayat.
Newman, on loan from Surrey until the end of the season, hit 13 fours on his way to 79 from 107 balls, while Shafayat made 66 with 10 fours from 128 balls.
Both men were victims of former England seamer Matthew Hoggard but all-rounder Paul Franks (46 not out) then hit 11 fours to give Notts a 45-run lead.
Resuming from their overnight score of 220 for eight, Yorkshire tail-enders David Wainwright and Hoggard added 35 to the total before the left-handed Wainwright edged a rising ball from Franks to Ali Brown at first slip, having made 37.
The innings was ended in the very next over by veteran Mark Ealham, who found the edge of Deon Kruis' bat to hand wicketkeeper Chris Read his fourth catch.
With conditions still looking good for swing bowling and Nottinghamshire's top order having had a nightmare season, the visitors would have been confident of making early inroads into the batting.
But with none of the Yorkshire bowlers able to consistently put the ball in the right spot, Newman and fellow opener Alex Hales posted 76 for the opening partnership before a mistimed drive from Hales offered a simple return catch to Richard Pyrah.
That was the signal for a Yorkshire comeback as Mark Wagh edged Pyrah to wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy in his next over before Samit Patel's attempted drive off Ajmal Shahzad ended in the hands of Jonathan Bairstow at third slip.
Newman and Shafayat added 51 for the fourth wicket before the former pulled a long hop from Hoggard to Andrew Gale on the square leg boundary, with Brown bowled by an arm ball from Wainwright in the next over.
With Notts wobbling on 153 for five, skipper Read combined with Shafayat to take the hosts within touching distance of the Yorkshire total.
Read hit eight fours before he was out-thought by left-arm spinner Wainwright, who responded to being hit over the top with a quicker, wider ball to leave Read stumped for 42.
Shafayat then lost his middle stump to a full swinging delivery from Hoggard but Franks maintained the momentum with some pleasing drives and clips off his hips and will resume in the morning looking to push Notts into a winning position, with Ealham 10 not out.
