Kent Spitfires sent Derbyshire Phantoms crashing to their first NatWest Pro40 League Division Two defeat of the season to win a high-scoring game at Chesterfield by four wickets.

A big crowd at the picturesque Queen's Park ground were treated to some explosive strokeplay as Kent chased down the home side's total of 259 for eight with 10 balls to spare.

Derbyshire captain Chris Rogers top scored with 88 from 107 balls, which set the platform for a punishing assault from the lower order with Jon Clare blasting 34 from 17 balls as 75 came from the last six overs.

That left a Kent side missing their top four batsmen with a lot to do - but Alex Blake set them up by blasting 80 off 70 balls and then Darren Stevens and Azhar Mahmood smashed half-centuries to take the Spitfires to 260 for six.

Kent's bowlers had been wayward at the start of Derbyshire's innings and gave away a flurry of wides before Amjad Khan got his line right to have Gary Park lbw for eight in the sixth over.

Greg Smith chopped Phil Edwards into his stumps and Wavell Hinds also went cheaply but Rogers reached his half-century off 59 balls to lay the foundations for a challenging total.

Rogers was unlucky to be given out lbw to Rob Ferley when the ball struck him on the thigh but the Phantoms' lower order launched into the Kent bowlers in the closing overs.

Clare and Tim Groenewald peppered the small boundaries to add 43 in only three overs with the seventh wicket pair plundering 18 from a Mahmood over.

Groenewald hit 22 off 11 balls before he skied a catch going for another big hit off Mahmood - but the Pakistani all-rounder conceded 43 off his last 15 balls.

Steffan Jones continued the assault by driving Edwards straight for six to get off the mark and Clare reached his highest one-day score before he was bowled off the last ball of the innings.

Kent lost Sam Northeast in the third over for five but James Hockley and Blake scored steadily to take the score to 86 before Hockley drove leg spinner Mark Lawson to long on.

Blake reached his 50 off 49 balls and then tore into Lawson, hitting him out of the ground and pulling and driving him for two more sixes in consecutive overs.

Greg Smith pegged the Spitfires back by bowling Justin Kemp for 16 and trapping Blake lbw to leave the visitors needing 87 off the last 10 overs.

But Stevens and Mahmood turned what looked like a daunting chase into a stroll as they demolished the Phantoms bowling.

The pair scored 83 in just seven overs with Stevens pulling and driving Clare for sixes while Mahmood put another big dent into Lawson's figures by twice lifting him over the long-on boundary.

Stevens reached his half-century off 26 balls while Mahmood's came off only 23 balls - and although they both fell to consecutive balls from Dan Redfern's off-spin with six runs needed, the damage had been done.
