The match between Somerset and Sussex at the County Ground in Taunton petered out into the expected draw, from which both sides taking 10 points from the LV County Championship Division One match.

There was little chance of a result after most of the third day was lost to the rain, so Somerset's target for day four was to take maximum batting points.

They achieved this thanks to centuries from Arul Suppiah and Craig Kieswetter, after resuming on 164 without loss.

Suppiah and Marcus Trescothick added just five runs before the former England man mistimed a shot and was caught at wide midwicket by Ed Joyce off Dwayne Smith.

Smith also accounted for James Hildreth, who played a loose shot outside off-stump and was caught by wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd.

Shortly afterwards off-spinner Ollie Rayner accounted for new batsman Zander de Bruyn, who was superbly caught at wide mid-on by Murray Goodwin - who had to make a lot of ground to take the chance.

The two batsmen crossed while the ball was in the air and off the next delivery Suppiah reached his century with a big six over long-on.

This was Suppiah's third century of the season and came off 232 balls, including 17 fours and two sixes.

Suppiah brought up the 250 in the final over before lunch when he clipped Yasir Arafat off his legs to deep square leg for a single, then Craig Kieswetter pulled the Sussex paceman over square leg for a six to make the score 256 for three at the break.

Suppiah had advanced his own score to 133 when he looked to sweep Rayner and was given out leg before wicket. Along with Kieswetter the opener had put on 77 runs for the fourth wicket.

When new batsman Peter Trego joined Kieswetter the hosts still needed 120 runs to reach their target off 22 overs, but the arrival of the all-rounder stepped up the run rate considerably.

Kieswetter reached his 50 with two off Smith through the covers and it was the young wicketkeeper who brought up the 300 three overs later with two off Rayner.

The Somerset pair started to take their runs with ease and Kieswetter brought up the 350 and another batting point for the home team.

Trego went to his 50 with a boundary to long on off Smith and in the next over the all-rounder brought up the 400 and maximum batting points, with a six off Rayner into the Colin Atkinson Pavilion.

Rayner put an end to the fifth wicket partnership, which added 131 in 21 overs, two overs later when he had Trego caught at silly point by Carl Hopkinson for 67.

Two balls later Kieswetter hit Rayner into the Sir Ian Botham Stand for six, followed by a four to long-off to bring up his century. It was his third of the season, came off 138 balls and included 12 fours and three sixes.

Kieswetter and Omari Banks, in only his fourth championship match for the county, added 100 for the sixth wicket before the former West Indies Test player was out for 53, which included six fours and three sixes.

Somerset declared on 521 for six, by which time Kieswetter was unbeaten on 135.

The pick of the Sussex bowlers was Rayner, who ended with figures of four for 185 from his 52 overs, seven of which were maidens.
