Adil Rashid demolished Hampshire with a five-wicket spell at Basingstoke to enable Yorkshire to record their first LV County Championship win in 21 matches.

Hampshire was shot out for 251 to hand Yorkshire victory by an innings and 22 runs halfway through the afternoon session on the last day at May's Bounty.

Hampshire needed 274 to make Yorkshire bat a second time and were prospering at 230 for four, when 21-year-old Rashid brought his leg spin into the attack.

Hampshire fell away from the moment Sean Ervine was run out for 48, losing their last six wickets for only 21, five of them to Rashid who took his wickets at a cost of just 41 runs.

Hampshire began the last day at 75 for two in their second innings and were aware that defeat by their relegation rivals would send them plummeting into the bottom two of the First Division.

They reached 107 before losing their first wicket of the day, James Vince leg before to former England bowler Matthew Hoggard for 43.

Crucial to Yorkshire's success was the removal of Hampshire's in-form opener Michael Carberry, a contender for an England place in the fifth Ashes Test at The Oval.

Carberry had scored centuries in his previous four Championship matches and was in sight of another after making an authoritative 70 in an innings which included 11 fours.

But from his 132nd delivery Carberry edged Ajmal Shahzad to wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy.

Hampshire's hopes of saving the match were revived when Ervine joined Liam Dawson in the most productive stand of the innings, 94 for the fifth wicket, but then Rashid came on to change the course of the game.

Dimitri Mascarenhas was out first ball, immediately after Ervine's dismissal, caught at the wicket off Rashid and the rest was a procession.

Dawson's vigilant innings of 50 came to an end at 239 when he guided Rashid to Joe Sayers at slip after hitting nine fours, and there was little resistance from the tail.

Chris Tremlett went at the same score, another victim of Rashid to a further Brophy catch.

Imran Tahir was stumped by the wicketkeeper at 247 and four runs later England prospect Rashid completed the rout when he bowled last man David Griffiths.

Rashid's figures came from 16.5 overs and included six maidens as Yorkshire began their celebrations.

Wicketkeeper Tom Burrows was stranded on eight not out at Hampshire's demise.
