Skipper Chris Read hit his third hundred of the season as Nottinghamshire enjoyed a productive first day against Warwickshire.

The LV County Championship challengers recovered from the loss of three early wickets to post 388 in their first innings, with Read making a fluent 110 from 148 balls with 17 fours.

Adam Voges hit a rapid 68 and Samit Patel 47 for the hosts, while Naqaash Tahir picked up four for 89 and India international Sreesanth claimed three for 65 on his county debut.

Warwickshire's England hopefuls Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott were forced to wait for their chance to impress, as openers Ian Westwood and Ant Botha reached the close unbeaten on 24 without loss, still 364 behind.

With overcast and warm conditions around Nottingham at the start of play, it was not surprising to see the Bears choose to bowl after winning the toss, particularly with Trent Bridge's reputation for aiding swing.

And the fragile Notts top order duly obliged with Scott Newman, Matthew Wood and Mark Wagh all dismissed inside 14 overs by Tahir, who found joy from a full and probing length all day.

Left-hander Newman, on loan from Surrey, was lbw playing forward to a ball that nipped back, Wood edged to gully and Wagh was bowled by an off-cutter.

With the scoreboard reading 43 for three, overseas batsman Adam Voges counter-attacked in attractive fashion, pulling two consecutive deliveries from Boyd Rankin for six as he and Patel put on 98 in 17 overs.

Sreesanth ended the partnership with a double strike just after lunch, Voges edging to Bell at gully and Ali Brown fending a rising ball to Rikki Clarke in the slips.

But Read, Notts' leading scorer in first class cricket this season, slipped straight into the groove with a straight drive for four and led from the front to ensure his side picked up four batting points in pursuit of Division One leaders Durham.

He offered only one chance on 83, with Trott failing to hold a diving catch at slip off Chris Woakes, and reached his century with a driven four through midwicket.

Patel had earlier been trapped lbw on the back foot by Clarke, who also caught Mark Ealham for 37 off Sreesanth.

Read was then bowled by Tahir and Andre Adams caught off a top-edge after swatting a six and four fours on his way to 32, with Ryan Sidebottom last to fall driving to mid-off.

Westwood and Botha faced some testing deliveries from Sidebottom and Charlie Shreck but survived unscathed.
