Derbyshire seamer Tim Groenewald produced career-best figures of six for 50 to spark a Surrey collapse on day two of their LV County Championship Division Two clash at Whitgift School in Croydon.
Surrey, who at one stage yesterday were 275 for one and resumed this morning on 308 for three, lost their last seven wickets for 54 runs in 20.1 overs after play started late because of heavy overnight rain.
Last week, in Derbyshire's match against Kent at Canterbury, Groenewald had posted a championship-best return of four for 69.
He went into this match on top of Derbyshire's bowling averages, with 15 wickets at 23.6, and soon improved on that with a spell of five wickets for 10 runs in damp and cloudy conditions.
Play did not start until 1.40pm, and there were only five overs before the players disappeared again because of bad light.
But then the Derbyshire bowlers made up for lost time.
Usman Afzaal had added only six runs to his overnight 18 when he hooked Graham Wagg to deep backward square leg, where Wavell Hinds took a good catch.
Stewart Walters was fifth out at 336, lbw to Groenewald as he played defensively forward.
Matthew Spriegel scored only nine before he lost his leg stump to Wagg and then Groenewald took over completely, bagging the last four wickets as he bustled in and moved the ball away from the right-handers at a nippy pace.
Chris Schofield, attempting to work the ball to leg, was lbw for four and Jade Dernbach was caught by Chris Rogers at second slip for two.
There was not much resistance from the tail. Groenewald had Pedro Collins caught by Wagg at third man for four and wrapped up the innings for 362 when he bowled Simon King, whose eight had taken 38 minutes.
This is only South Africa-born Groenewald's fifth championship game of the season because of a back problem.
He played a few matches for Warwickshire between 2006 and 2008 without impressing and was released by the county by mutual consent at the end of last season.
The best batting conditions came in the final hour but by then Derbyshire had lost two wickets. Wayne Madsen had scored a patient single in 20 minutes when he fell lbw to Dernbach to make it eight for one at tea.
Derbyshire lost their second wicket at 47 when Garry Park was caught at second slip by Walters off Collins. At the close they were 169 for two, with Rogers unbeaten on 80.
