Sean Ervine and Jimmy Adams each scored centuries as Hampshire took advantage of a depleted Lancashire attack at the Rose Bowl.

Irvine hit a Hampshire-best 114 and Adams, 82 not out overnight, went on to make 107 on an easy-paced wicket.

Hampshire still managed to muster only a moderate 337 with three men failing to score and another, Liam Dawson contributing only three.

Lancashire went into the match without injured front line bowlers Glen Chapple and Sajid Mahmood but Kyle Hogg and Oliver Newby did their best to cover their absence by taking four wickets each.

Hampshire resumed after a rain-hit first day on 144-2 and soon lost James Vince and Dawson to catches at the wicket off Newby.

Adams reached his second century of the summer along the way before Newby struck again in the morning session having Adams leg before after hitting 16 fours and a six in an innings of 188 balls.

Ervine and his captain Dimitri Mascarenhas added 69 for the sixth wicket before Mascarenhas edged Hogg to the wicketkeeper and there was a steady procession of wickets tumbling soon afterwards as Tom Burrows, David Griffiths and Imran Tahir all fell without scoring to Newby, Gary Keedy and Tom Smith.

That left Hampshire 287 for nine and at that stage Ervine was unbeaten with 70 and his second century of the summer looked a long way off.

But last man James Tomlinson offered brave support as Ervine lifted Smith over mid-wicket for six to bring up the Hampshire 300 and then produced the shock of the match in reverse sweeping Keedy for another.

Tomlinson was dropped before he had scored at first slip by Paul Horton off Smith to give Ervine just the incentive he needed to push on for his century which came off 137 balls and also included 12 fours.

The innings came to an end at 337 when Ervine lifted Hogg to long on where Smith completed the catch.

The last wicket pair had put on 50, taking their side to a batting bonus point with Ervine's completed innings made up of 15 fours and coming off 144 balls.

Hogg's tenacity was rewarded with figures of four for 74 and Newby's final analysis was four for 105.

When Lancashire batted they also found no alarms in the wicket and Horton and Smith put on 62 in 22 overs.

Horton had made 34 when he attempted to hook a bouncer from Griffiths and Tahir clutched the catch low down running in from long leg.

Smith and Mal Loye saw Lancashire through to stumps at 106 for one from 37 overs, giving Hampshire an overnight lead of 231 and with Smith 44 not out.
