Michael Lumb and Liam Dawson steered Hampshire to a winning start in their Pro40 campaign in a thrilling encounter at the Rose Bowl.

Opener Lumb struck a fine 53 before teenage all-rounder Dawson followed his miserly bowling figures of one for 29 to pinch the winning run with the final ball of the innings.

Yorkshire openers Jacques Rudolph (79) and Andrew Gale (54) earlier secured Yorkshire a commanding start, putting on 77 for the first wicket.

Gale lived a charmed life as he survived a run-out decision as well as being dropped by Hampshire wicketkeeper Tom Burrows in successive deliveries before Dawson finally caught him at mid-on.

Adam Lyth (25) was the next man out as he was run out at the non-striker's end before Jonathan Bairstow (one) followed in similar fashion following a fine Chris Benham throw.

Rudolph's half-century arrived in the 27th over but by that stage, the run rate had begun to dip as Dawson's consistent line and variation limited opportunities.

Wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy (34) looked to be rebuilding the innings before Dawson bowled him and Rudolph followed soon after, smashing Imran Tahir straight down the throat of Dominic Cork.

Richard Pyrah (17) added a few precious runs at the tail end of the innings before he was caught by Dawson but there was an overriding feeling that Yorkshire were a short of runs.

That certainly looked to be the case as Lumb and fellow opener Jimmy Adams (44) put on 95 for Hampshire's first wicket with a fine range of shots to leave them well above the required run rate.

England spinner Adil Rashid was introduced into the attack and soon removed Adams, Tim Bresnan taking a fine catch and the rate soon slowed as the boundaries dried up.

Lumb fell to some fine glove work from Brophy off the bowling of David Wainwright and at 147 for two with 10 overs remaining, the chase looked a difficult one.

Michael Carberry (39) and Sean Ervine responded with some big hits but the pair were fortunate at times, especially Ervine as he was dropped first by Bairstow and then Gale.

Carberry's dismissal came with another fine catch from Brophy but captain Dimitri Mascarenhas continued the onslaught with the bat to leave Hampshire requiring 18 off the last two overs.

Mascarenhas (34) and Ervine (41) were both run out by Lyth to leave the relatively inexperienced Dawson to shoulder the burden of victory with three balls remaining.

Dawson took a quick two to tie the scores before flicking Matthew Hoggard off his pads and scampering to victory.
