Warwickshire seamers Neil Carter and Chris Woakes took seven wickets in 11 overs as a crazy interlude before lunch at New Road underlined Worcestershire's plight in the LV County Championship.

The Division One strugglers eventually subsided for 111 in two-and-a-half hours and, despite a more robust response when following on 198 behind, they are still facing a seventh defeat in 10 games this season.

Stephen Moore and Vikram Solanki, who compiled a stand of 61 in the wreckage of the first innings, again stood form by putting on 121 as Worcestershire edged into a lead of eight on closing the third day at 206 for six.

Carter and Woakes, the key bowlers in Warwickshire's last Championship win against Glamorgan last September, benefited from favourable conditions when Worcestershire's batsmen failed to cope with accurate swing bowling.

New Road has become a happy hunting ground for Carter. Having taken six for 100 in a drawn match last year when the midlands counties came up from Division Two, he followed up with five for 37, his best figures in the current campaign.

In an unchanged spell of 12 overs, four of his wickets came from leg-before decisions and the other dismissal left no room for argument when the 34-year-old left-arm pace bowler ripped out Moeen Ali's off stump.

Woakes also took his chance to shine with four for 30 in his best performance at county level this summer. Although he picked up six for 43 in the England Lions fixture against the West Indies, he had taken only 13 Championship wickets in eight previous matches for Warwickshire.

It was Woakes who initiated Worcestershire's problems. Moore (28) and Solanki (27) were beginning to raise the tempo with nine boundaries between them until they departed in successive overs from the 20-year-old.

Steven Davies, with 19, was the only other player to reach double figures as Worcestershire lost nine wickets for the addition of 42.

The second innings then began badly when Daryl Mitchell went for nought, edging Naqaash Tahir to second slip, but Worcestershire staged a partial recovery after an early let-off for Moore.

Reprieved by a no-ball call when he fended a catch to point off Boyd Rankin, the opener went on to make 88, with 17 fours, before Warwickshire re-applied the pressure.

With Solanki falling to Rankin for 46, brilliantly caught by Jim Troughton at point, Moore aimed a lavish drive at Tahir and Rikki Clarke held the edge at second slip.

Rankin then removed Ben Smith and Davies in five balls but Moeen held up his former county, adding 46 with Alexei Kervezee before his partner was caught behind off Carter with the scores level.
