Somerset beat Scotland by 37 runs at the Citylets Grange to maintain their perfect record in the Friends Provident Trophy.

The west country side were restricted to 220 for eight from their 50 overs, but superb bowling by Zander de Bruyn and Alfonso Thomas saw the Saltires all out for 183 in the 46th over.

Scotland again elected to field and were rewarded in the eighth over when Jan Stander dismissed Marcus Trescothick and James Hildreth in consecutive balls.

The Sabres continued to lose wickets at regular intervals thanks to tidy spells from Ryan Watson and Majid Haq, who finished with identical figures of two for 37 from 10 overs.

Craig Kieswetter (42 from 64 balls) and Arul Suppiah (48 from 80 balls) both made starts but fell short of their half-centuries, while Justin Langer demoted himself to six and looked uncomfortable as he made 39 from 73 balls.

Late hitting by Thomas and Omari Banks helped Somerset pass 200, but the bowlers were left with plenty of work to do.

As has often been the case this season, Scotland began aggressively but threw wickets away in the pursuit of quick runs.

Gavin Hamilton and Fraser Watts tried to attack, but a strangulating spell of fast bowling from Thomas and De Bruyn choked off the supply of runs and forced mistakes from the frustrated batsmen.

Watts made 16 before he was clean-bowled attempting an ugly slog to mid-wicket, while Hamilton was caught in the gully on 29 after slashing at a wide delivery.

De Bruyn was devastating, picking up both openers and finishing with three for 24 from 10 overs.

Cameron Borgas and Richie Berrington gave the Saltires hope by adding 83 for the fifth wicket, but when Berrington was caught and bowled by Suppiah on 23, the match was slipping away.

Borgas battled on, keeping the strike and sending loose balls to the fence, but he was fast running out of partners.

As the required run rate edged upwards, Stander ran himself out for 12 and Sean Weeraratna followed next ball caught and bowled by Thomas.

Thomas then claimed the wickets of Haq (three from seven balls) and Simon Smith (two from three balls), to finish with four for 22 and the man of the match award.

Borgas finished unbeaten on 78 as Scotland were bowled out for 183.

The result means Somerset finish on top of Group B and are guaranteed a home quarter-final on May 23, while Scotland are left to rue another disappointing one-day season.
