Scotland went down to Warwickshire by 50 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method in a rain-affected Friends Provident Trophy Match at the Citylets Grange.

The Saltires put in a vastly improved fielding performance to restrict Warwickshire to 242 for six, but slumped to their sixth successive defeat after rain reduced their chase to 48 overs.

Scotland won the toss and sent Warwickshire in to bat on a pitch that had been soaked by early morning mist.

Craig Wright and Gordon Drummond made the most of the conditions and Wright was rewarded for a superb spell when Ian Bell skied a simple catch to Jan Stander at mid-off.

After Tim Ambrose was caught in the deep by Fraser Watts, Jim Troughton and Ian Westwood were content to push singles and bide their time.

When they tried to lift the tempo they came unstuck.

Westwood miscued a cut to Gavin Hamilton on 25 and when Drummond was brought back to the attack he clean bowled Rikki Clarke (three from four balls) and Troughton (77 from 125 deliveries) in his first over.

Once Troughton departed, the rain came down and the Warwickshire innings might have fizzled out if Jan Stander had not bowled the final over.

Ant Botha cracked him for three consecutive boundaries before Stander inexplicably decided the end the match with a no-ball that was so short it cleared the keeper's head and went to the boundary.

The free hit was despatched over the rope, the final over cost 26 runs and Warwickshire finished on 242 with 43 coming in the final three overs.

Scotland began their chase brightly under a dark sky.

Boyd Rankin's first three overs were despatched for 30 runs before the paceman was given a rest on the third man boundary.

Watts helped himself to 20 from 18 balls before being caught and bowled by Chris Woakes, but Hamilton and Ryan Watson continued to attack - perhaps with one eye on the Duckworth Lewis machine.

Once Watson had his middle stump uprooted by Keith Barker on 16, the runs dried up and Scotland fell behind the required score. Spinners Jeetan Patel and Botha reduced Hamilton and Cameron Borgas to risky singles and when Hamilton was out trying to reverse sweep Botha, the game hung in the balance.

The Scots' cause was not helped when a visiting supporter ran onto the pitch and made off with one of the bails.

The man left the Grange by climbing over a wall and two balls later Neil McCallum left in a more conventional way: caught at square leg for 22 trying to sweep Botha.

Minutes later the excellent Patel had Stander caught behind for one, and in the next over Botha had Simon Smith caught on the boundary for three.

Wright came out swinging, but when Borgas threw his wicket away on 35, Scotland were still behind on the Duckworth Lewis method.

Wright departed for 28 from 19 balls, Drummond fell for five and Glen Rogers was ran out for seven.

Dewald Nel was left stranded on one as Warwickshire wrapped up the points with 20 balls to spare as they bowled the hosts out for 187.
