A solid 87 from Ashish Bagai proved the foundation for Canada as they set Scotland 253 for victory their World Cup qualifying game in Benoni.

Canada captain Bagai was given good support from Sunil Dhaniram (41), with only Craig Wright, who took three for 23, really threatening for the Scots with his miserly 10-over spell.

Geoff Barnett and John Davison set the Canadians on their way to a flying start as they reached 50 in just the 10th over.

Davison, on 29, was dropped two balls later by Navdeep Poonia running in from the deep cover boundary off Dewald Nel.

Wright was then introduced in the 12th over and struck immediately by breaking the partnership at 59 when he had Barnett (21) stumped by Colin Smith, followed by the dismissal of Rizwan Cheema three balls later, trapped leg before wicket for a duck.

In the next over, Davison pulled his calf and was forced to retire hurt, before Wright struck for the third time 18th over when he had Ian Billcliff caught at mid-off by Nel for three.

Dhaniram and Bagai added an attacking 81-run partnership, before the former was out in the 36th over playing on from a Jan Stander delivery.

Ryan Watson put down a straightforward return catch from the new man Sandeep Jyoti, but the skipper continued to fight and reached his half-century in 94 balls.

But Jyoti (16) was soon out, caught behind by Smith off Calum MacLeod, followed by the wicket of the returning Davison (32) snapped up by John Blain at short third man off Stander.

Bagai's 122-ball innings was eventually ended by MacLeod, who had him caught at mid-on by a diving Stander, before Umar Bhatti (14 not out) and Khurram Chohan (nine not out) helped Canada reach 252 for seven.
