England collapsed in quickfire fashion as Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne
hurried Australia to victory by 239 runs in the first npower Test at Lord's.
England resumed on 156 for five after a four and a quarter hour rain delay and
they folded without showing much resistance to be dismissed for 180 with the
last five wickets falling in the space of 46 balls.
Only Kevin Pietersen's second half century of the game gave a few crumbs of
comfort to an England side who were outplayed after the euphoria of the first
day in dismissing Australia for 190.
McGrath, who had taken five wickets in the first innings, opened proceedings
from the pavilion end and he was immediately into a good rhythm with a maiden
over to wicket-keeper Geraint Jones.
Warne, England's main tormentor on Saturday with three wickets, was also treated
with caution by Jones and Kevin Pietersen who resumed on 42 not out.
But then Jones threw his wicket away with an ill-advised pull shot to the
third delivery of McGrath's second over. The Kent player only succeeded in
lofting a comfortable catch to Jason Gillespie at mid-on.
Jones had made only six to complete an unhappy Test match in which he had also
spilled two easy chances on Saturday.
England were then 158 for six - and two balls later it became 158 for seven as
Ashley Giles became McGrath's second victim of the over.
McGrath softened up the spinner with a bouncer and his next delivery prompted
Giles to steer the ball into the hands of Matthew Hayden at gulley.
The players returned to action after a 10-minute break for rain with Matthew
Hoggard accompanying Pietersen out to the wicket for what was increasingly
looking like a lost cause.
Pietersen was being allowed to take a single almost anywhere to allow McGrath
and Warne to try to expose a fragile looking tail.
But it was surprising that he went for that option in the early part of most
overs rather than look to protect as much as possible the lower-order.
That back-fired when Hoggard completed an unwanted pair when he was adjudged
lbw to McGrath by a ball that jagged back into him to leave England on 164 for
eight.
Pietersen had time to complete his second half century of the game off 68
balls with five fours and a six.
But then Warne got in on the act by claiming his first wicket of the day to
have Steve Harmison lbw for nought to the first ball he faced.
Pietersen showed some late defiance by lofting Warne for six over mid-wicket
but McGrath ended the match by having Simon Jones caught by Warne at first
slip.
His wicket to wicket spell today was four wickets for three runs off 23 balls
while Warne finished with four for 64. Australia win the first Test against England at Lord's by 239 runs.
