Batty is England’s back-up spinner, the man to whom Michael Vaughan and Duncan Fletcher turn in the absence of Ashley Giles or on the rare occasions they field two slow bowlers.
The Yorskhire-born offbreak bowler made his debut on Vaughan’s first tour as captain, playing first in Bangladesh and then Sri Lanka.
He then made one appearance on last year’s tour of the West Indies and replaced the injured Giles in two Tests against Bangladesh at the start of the summer.
A strong lower-order batsman and fielder, Batty was limited to 15 overs in that series, an experience indicative of the limited opportunity he has had thus far.
A Headingley contemporary of Vaughan, he failed to make the grade both with his native county and Surrey before joining Worcestershire.
New Road coach Tom Moody has been credited with Batty’s rapid development, something which has also been recognised by involvement at ODI level.
It is unlikely that the former Australia batsman will have helped to bring down his homeland, however, with Giles assured of a starting place if fit and Batty with much left to do to convince at the highest level.
