Police arrested a man in connection with allegations of death threats made against members of the visiting Australian cricket team, it emerged on Monday.

Officers arrested the 32-year-old from Stoke-on-Trent after threats were sent to the players via email.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "A 32-year-old man was arrested on September 9 in connection with an allegation of making threats to kill.

"He was later released on bail to return to a Staffordshire police station on October 27."

It is understood the man was tracked down via his email address.

Australian fast bowler Brett Lee told Australia's Nine Network that his team were aware of death threats made against them during the Ashes tour.

Lee said the players had been told of the threats as they went into the final Test at The Oval.

He told the network: "We were aware of some death threats. It is obviously now a matter for the police.

"We have experts over here with the team and are very well looked after."
