1208: England win by 2 runs

1207: Over 62.3 WICKET!
MS Kasprowicz c GO Jones b Harmison 20
A short one angled across the pitch has Kasprowicz taking evasive action and he gloves the ball over leg, GO Jones stoops forward and low to his left to scoop the catch.

1207: Over 62.2 Slightly fuller from Harmison but blocked away. No run.

1207: Over 62.1 Harmison pitches one up outside off and Lee takes a single to deep cover. 3 to win

1206: Australia need 4 to win

1206: Over 61.6 Flintoff bangs one into the body and Lee fends off to the leg side. He drops his bat but takes the single to keep the strike. 4 to win

1206: Over 61.5 Flintoff pitches one up outside off and Lee agonisingly plays and misses. No run.

1205: Over 61.4 Same again. Flintoff pitches short and it swings wildly across the stumps but Jones makes a good take high to his left. No run.

1204: Over 61.3 Flintoff pitches short and it swings wildly across the stumps but Jones makes a good take. No run.

1204: Over 61.2 Fuller ball outside off, left alone by the batsman. No run.

1204: Over 61.1 Too short from Flintoff, easily ducked by Lee. No run.

1203: Australia need 5 to win

1203: Over 60.6 Fuller ball blocked by Kasprowicz and played out to gully. No run.

1202: Over 60.5 Stock delivery outside off on a length, left alone by the batsman. No run.

1201: Over 60.4 Another wild leg-side ball from Harmison is stopped by Jones. No run.

1201: Over 60.3 Attempted yorker kept out by Kasprowicz. No run.

1200: Over 60.2 Harmison gets away with one down the leg side as Jones collects. No run.

1200: Over 60.1 Straight and full, Lee digs the ball out and takes a single to mid-on. 5 to win

1159: Over 59.6 Flintoff beats Lee's outside edge with his stock, shorter ball but dots are of little use. No run.

1158: Over 59.5 Inside edge to a straighter ball and a single taken by Lee. 6 to win

1157: Over 59.4 Kasprowicz nervelessly picks up a full ball outside off and pushes the single. 7 to win

1157: Over 59.4 Lee drops the bat on an off-stump ball and takes a quick single to the left hand of short cover. 8 to win

1156: Over 59.2 Lee pushes to mid-off. No run.

1155: Over 59.2 Big error from Flintoff. Wild no-ball down the leg side for four byes. 9 to win

1155: Over 59.1 The first ball is short of a length wide on the off and Kasprowicz skies one down to SP Jones at third man. The ball carries low and the Welshman gets his hands to it but it won't stick. Single. 14 to win

1154: Australia require 15 runs to win

1154: Over 58.6 Harmison beats the outside edge once again. No run. He's finding his line but it's another four off the over and that is the inherent danger in bowling the Geordie.

1153: Over 58.5 Harmison find the outside edge but it falls short of gully. No run.

1153: Over 58.4 Simple ball pushed through outside off and Lee plays and misses. No run.

1152: Over 58.3 Tries the slower one and Lee plays it too early but the ball hits bat, pad and falls to ground harmlessly. No run.

1152: Over 58.2 Harmison rattles one through again, it brushes the thigh pad and races through to GO Jones. No run.

1150: Over 58.1 Harmison beats Lee for pace, gets an inside edge and the ball races past GO Jones' left hand for four. 15 to win

1149: Australia require 19 runs to win

1149: Over 57.6 Again resists the full length ball, it's another short of a length, jagging in off the pitch to strike the thigh pad. One leg bye.

1148: Over 57.5 Full length ball expected but it's another short of a length, jagging in off the pitch to strike the leg. No run.

1146: Over 57.4 Ball pitched short on off, jagging into the rib cage. Lee takes his bottom hand off the bat in fear and the ball raps the top hand full on at chest height. No run. Play is stopped for treatment.

1145: Over 57.3 Carbon copy. Outside off, short of a length and jagging in but blocked. No run.

1144: Over 57.2 Outside off, short of a length and jagging in but blocked. No run.

1144: Over 57.1 Ball pitched up outside off, Lee takes a wild swing but misses by some distance. No run.

1144: Flintoff on for Giles from the City End.

1143: With the target now just 20 runs away, we make the quantum leap to ball-by-ball updates so keep refreshing for live coverage of the most extraordinary Test match we have seen in many years.

1142: Over 59 Those fears are realised immediately. Harmison is fended off for a single and then hit for two to leg. The third ball is unforgivable for England, a wide leg-side delivery which Geraint Jones cannot stop and four byes takes the runs needed to 20. Harmison is now bowling over 90mph and finds his line for the last couple but Kasprowicz plays straight and true, blocking outside off.

1138: Harmison returns to the attack in place of Flintoff at the Pavilion End. The introduction of SP Jones, bowling fast and straight and full, might have been preferable to the express pace of a bowler who always goes for runs.

1137: Over 58 Lee takes strike to Giles, bowling around the wicket. The first ball is blocked by a positive stride down the crease, the second bamboozles the batsman but can't find a way through and the strike changes with a single to mid-off. Kasprowicz immediately takes one to square leg, and Lee blocks once before finishing with one to mid-wicket. Now just 27 to win.

1131: Over 57 Flintoff starts with a ball dug in short and Lee fends away to deep backward point for a single. Kasprowicz flicks the next ball backward of square on the leg side and runs hard for two. The bowler responds with a bouncer but the number 11 ducks. Simon Jones stops the ball square on ball four, the fifth is blocked too and the over finishes with another bouncer, too wide and through to GO Jones. Drinks taken on the field and in the commentary box too. Is it brandy which is good for the nerves?

1127: Over 56 Perhaps unsettled by his partner's less-than-special start, Lee charges Giles next ball and hits a massive four over midwicket. He then takes a single and Kasprowicz looks comfortable enough against the slow bowler as he blocks one before lifting the ball over mid-off for four. The over finishes with a thick outside edge missing Trescothick's right hand at slip and racing away for four. Thirteen from the over and 33 to win.

1123: Over 55 Flintoff has a big lbw shout straight up but the ball hits Kasprowicz just on and around off stump and Bowden cannot be sure so shakes his head; they take a leg bye. Lee slashes a wide one over the cordon for four and then takes a single. Kasprowicz looks well out of his league, trying to evade a bouncer but almost walking into it and heading the ball past gully. Vaughan puts in a leg gully but the batsman responds with a clip off the legs for four and those only 46 to get.

1118: Over 54 Kasprowicz gets off strike as GO Jones fails to keep an eye on one which beats the outside edge. Lee still looks uncomfortable but positive to Giles, who cleverly keeps the batsman pinned at that end to allow Flintoff a shot at Kaspo.

1114: Over 53 Michael Kasprowicz arrives at the crease with 62 still to get and promptly gets a single. Lee is back on strike and receives a sharp, steep-rising ball bouncing from just short of a length which crashes into the batsman's left arm. There is a brief moment for Lee to recover but the next ball is also bumped in at an astonishing 93mph. A no ball from Flintoff is angled in and finds the outside edge from chest height, skipping away through fourth slip for four. Flintoff keeps up the pressure by bisecting Lee's defences and a full, body-line bouncer is fended off to Ian Bell at short leg to finish the over.

1109: WICKET!
SK Warne hit wkt b Flintoff 42
First ball of the over and Flintoff breaks the tension. He angles an inswinging yorker across and wide of leg stump; Warne jumps back and across, kicking over his own off stump.

1108: Over 52 Giles starts well, exacting good turn and making Lee uncomfortable. There are two blocks, a drive stopped at mid-off by Flintoff and a near-missed play-on. The over finishes with a flat one which Lee fails to reads and scoops up short of Flintoff at silly mid-off. England not getting the breaks this morning.

1105: Ashley Giles is introduced at the City End.

1104: Over 51 Flintoff charges in once again but is met with a straight bat from Lee as he hammers another powerful off drive. Matthew Hoggard chases down to stop the boundary. Flintoff responds with a lightening inswinger and raps Warne on the pads, they take a leg bye and umpire Bowden bizarrely signals no-ball which seems more than unfair on the Australian. Back on strike, Warne continues his policy of stepping across the stumps and therefore steps outside the line of two off-cutting bouncers.

1100: Over 50 Warne gets lucky early in the over when a short Harmison bouncer, deflecting a ball over the cordon for a single. But this is by no means a sign that England are on top as Lee hammers an off drive down the ground for four. Harmison switches around the wicket and finishes the over with just 66 more required to win. Our prophecy is beginning to take shape and Vaughan has a big decision to make on bowling changes.

1054: Over 49 Warne blasts the first ball of Flintoff's over to the boundary square of the wicket on the off side. The England man responds well with a better line and length but Lee and Warne are really sensing something here and rotate the strike for another couple.

1051: Over 48 Harmison goes the closest England have yet come to a wicket this morning, ripping a bouncer into Lee which the batsman can only deflect tantalisingly over the slips. He hits back with a four, however, and there are eventually 11 off the over.

1048: Over 47 Flintoff is hitting the deck hard but again the pitch looks timid and Lee and Warne each take runs in an over worth four more for the tourists.

1042: Over 46 Lee keeps the scoreboard ticking with four off the over. There are a couple of play-and-misses in there but that is only to be expected. And the total is now just 100 more.

1038: Over 45 Flintoff tries to put Warne under pressure from the off but the veteran looks comfortable. There is a no ball and he takes a single from the final ball of the over.

1034: Andrew Flintoff to bowl from the Pavilion End.

1033: Over 44 Lee takes two off the first ball to get off the mark and Harmison finishes with a dot.

1030: The players take the field. Steve Harmison has two balls left over from last night.

1000: Apologies if today's updates occasionally verge on the incoherent but your Ashes correspondent has had a strange and restless night.

It is rare for us to admit to dreams of an ecstatic, blond fat man but the recurring nightmare of Shane Warne taking the applause for his maiden Test century after guiding Australia to an improbable one-wicket victory has never been far from our thoughts since the close last night.

England begin day four on the verge of victory in the second Test after roaring back magnificently yesterday to leave the tourists on 175 for eight in pursuit of 282.

But Warne and Brett Lee can each hit a cricket ball and it will only take two or three good overs to set the Birmingham public's nerves on edge.
