WHITEHEAD FACES GOLD CHALLENGE
By Andy Hampson, PA Sport
Adam Whitehead faces a tough challenge to win his second gold medal of the
Commonwealth Games tonight.
The 100 metres breaststroke winner from Coventry qualified sixth fastest for
the 200m final after three tight heats at the Manchester Aquatics Centre this
morning.
The 20-year-old, who also claimed silver in the 50m, controlled his heat but
eased off in his final few strokes allowing South African Terence Parkin to
claim victory by nine hundredths of a second in two minutes 15.72 seconds.
The pair were however both overtaken by four qualifiers from the following
heat, which ended in a dead heat between Canadian Michael Brown and Jim Piper of
Australia.
Whitehead said: "All I wanted to do was qualify for the final, so I'm happy
with that.
"There's some tough guys out there, it'll be a strong field tonight, so we'll
just have to see what happens."
Scotland's Ian Edmond went through with the joint seventh fastest time.
Georgina Lee earlier claimed her place in the 200m butterfly final with
victory in the opening heat of the day.
Lee, a member of the gold medal-winning 4x200m freestyle team, finished clear
of compatriot Margaretha Pedder in 2:12.07 seconds.
New Zealand's Elizabeth van Welie snatched third spot.
They were joined in the final by Petria Thomas of Australia, who went through
from the second heat with the fastest time.
The 26-year-old, who already has already won two golds and a bronze at the
Aquatics Centre this past week, won in a time of 2:09.05. She was followed by
Canadians Jennifer Button and Jessica Deglau.
Australian Jennifer Reilly maintained her bid for a second medley gold with
the quickest time in the 400m this morning.
The 200m winner was almost three seconds ahead of her nearest challenger as
she won her heat in 4:44.57.
The winner of the other heat, New Zealand's Elizabeth van Welie, qualified
second fastest ahead of Australian Yvette Rodier and England's Rebecca Cooke.
Cooke, who won gold in both the 400m and 800m freestyle, produced a strong
final leg in her specialist discipline to go through with 4:50.60.
Compatriot Holly Fox and Wales' Gemma Mary Howells both missed out.
The scheduled heats of the men's 4x100m medley were cancelled this morning
after the Bahamas squad pulled out. The competition will begin later this
evening with the final.
