Mark Foster kept on course to retain his title as the fastest swimmer in the
Commonwealth at the Manchester Aquatics Centre this morning.
The University of Bath swimmer comfortably qualified for tonight's semi-finals
of the 50metres freestyle, an event he has won for the past two Games, with the
equal seventh best time.
Foster clocked 23.33 secs as did England team-mate Matthew Kidd who finished
fourth in last night's 100m freestyle final.
Chris Cozens qualified ninth overall (23.37) with Welshman Steven Evans
progressing in 15th spot (23.80).
Foster told BBC Television: "I came into the Games saying I wanted to win both
events. I failed in the first one so I want to make amends in this one.
"I always had plenty in reserve this morning. I want to save as much for the
final as I can."
Barnet's Sarah Price continued her memorable Games as she shattered the
12-year-old Commonwealth record in the 200m backstroke.
Price, who set three Games records on her way to 100m glory and is also in the
50m final tonight, set herself up for a double triumph with a convincing win.
The 23-year-old clocked two minutes 11.91 seconds in the heat to carve
0.41secs off the record set by New Zealand's Anna Simcic in Auckland in 1990.
Team-mates Katy Sexton, the defending champion, and Joanna Fargus, a world
bronze medallist last year, finished second and third fastest overall in 2:12.90
and 2:13.16.
