By Ian Gordon, PA Sport
Rachel Cooke powered to a freestyle double as she brought England more medal
glory at the Commonwealth Games in the Manchester Aquatics Centre.
The Reading-born swimmer won the 400metres free just 24 hours after she had
grabbed her first major title with victory in the 800m event.
Cooke, who now swims for the City of Glasgow, shattered the personal best she
set in the heats this morning to win in four minutes 9.49 secs to claim
England's tenth gold of the Games and their third of the evening.
Cooke told BBC television: "I'm ecstatic. I can't describe it - I'm just over
the moon.
"It felt very comfortable. I felt so confident at 200m and I just knew I
could hold the others off.
"Now the World Championships next year are my target."
Australia's Elka Graham finished over three seconds adrift in second spot with
Jamaica's Janelle Atkinson claiming bronze in 4:13.34.
Scotland's Karen Nisbet was sixth and Caroline Saxby seventh for England.
Welshman David Roberts set one of four world records to be broken in the final
of the multi-disability 100m freestyle.
Roberts set his in the S7 category with other records going to Canada's Benoit
Huit, Australia's Ben Austin and South Africa's Scott Field.
