Fargus, Price and Sexton celebrate their haul.

PRICE LEADS HOME SECOND ENGLISH SWEEP

By Ian Gordon, PA Sport

Sarah Price bagged a golden Commonwealth Games double as she spearheaded a second successive clean sweep for England in Manchester no Saturday night.

The 23-year-old from Enfield shattered the Games record she set on Friday to win the 200m backstroke in two minutes 10.58 seconds and add to her triumph in the 100m event.

America-based Joanna Fargus was second in 2:11.60 with Portsmouth's Katy Sexton powering down the last 20 metres to seize bronze in 2:12.01.

Price told BBC television: "I was really nervous before that because these girls are so tough but we got a one-two-three - what more could you ask for?

"I was so nervous because these girls are so tough. It's great that we've got the 1-2-3."

Fargus added: "I was a little disappointed because I wanted to win that but obvious Sarah was amazing."

Sexton said: "I'm pretty exhausted but I'm so pleased. I'm so excited to be here."

The backstroke clean sweep followed just minutes after James Gibson, Adam Whitehead and Darren Mew had blown away the opposition in the 50m breaststroke.

England's gold medal tally now stands at nine - four more than in Malaysia four years ago - while the total overall has raced up to 22.

Add Alison Sheppard ending Scotland's 28-year medal drought in the 50m freestyle, then this is conclusive evidence British swimming is on the up after the nightmare of Sydney two years ago.

Price is leading the way as she set her sixth Games record in the Manchester Aquatics centre this week slicing 0.33 secs off the mark she set on Friday.

Australia's Leisel Jones took gold in the 100m breaststroke.

The 17-year-old triumphed in 1:08.74 from Brooke Hanson (1:09.29) with Tarnee White third in 1:09.63.

England's Kate Haywood, at 15 the youngest swimmer on the team, was sixth in 1:10.20 with Jaime King eighth (1:11.49) with the duo split by Scotland's Kirsty Balfour in 1:10.68.
