BOWL CONSOLATION FOR SCOTS
Scotland gained some consolation for their disappointing showing in the rugby
sevens by lifting the bowl at the City of Manchester Stadium.
And the Scots, who beat Cook Islands 26-7 in this morning's semi-final,
collected their silverware in style, running in six sparkling tries to hammer
Tonga 40-26.
The Tongans made a dream start, with Sikuti Vunipola scoring the first try of
the match after just 18 seconds and adding the conversion for good measure.
But Scotland quickly recovered and found their rhythm to score three times
before the break through Gala forward David Gray, Edinburgh powerhouse Marcus di
Rollo, with his sixth try of the tournament, and skipper Mark Lee.
Viliami Vaki stopped the rot with a try before the break, when Scotland led
19-12, but the turning point came midway through the second half when Vaki
crossed a second time but put his foot over the dead-ball line and saw his score
disallowed.
Simon Taylor pulled off a tremendous tackle to haul down big Tongan forward
Charles Koloi in full flight for the line and the Scots clinched victory thanks
to two quick-fire tries from Rotherham three-quarter Sean Lamont.
Lee also grabbed his second try, with di Rollo taking his goal tally to five,
while Vaki and replacement John Alofi claimed late scores for Tonga.
