ENGLAND MAKE PLATE FINAL
By Andrew Baldock, PA Sport Rugby Union Correspondent
England reached the Commonwealth Games sevens plate final as they tried
to make amends for their medal flop.
Having crashed out of the main competition last night, England had to make do
with contesting the minor placings.
And they produced arguably their best performance of the three-day tournament
in brushing aside Canada to set up a plate final appointment with Australia.
Despite captain Phil Greening's early sin-binning for a dangerous tackle,
England slipped smoothly through the gears, securing a 29-0 victory thanks to
tries by Paul Sampson (2), Josh Lewsey, Pat Sanderson and Greening, with Henry
Paul booting two conversions.
Wales made a controversial exit from the plate, beaten 7-5 by Australia and
having skipper Jason Forster sin-binned.
Newport flanker Forster was yellow-carded for some footwork at a ruck, his
early exit coming after Emyr Lewis had seen a try disallowed following sustained
Welsh pressure.
Lewis looked to have grounded the ball under pressure from an Australian
tackler, but referee Rob Dickson didn't award it.
