Scotland's Sean Lamont in action against Sri Lanka.
SCOTLAND CONSOLED BY BOWL SUCCESS
Scotland gained some consolation for their exit from the main event at the
rugby sevens by reaching the semi-finals of the bowl with a 57-0 rout of Sri
Lanka at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Sean Lamont (Rotherham) and Kenny Sinclair (Glasgow Hawks) both scored two
tries and others came from Scott Paterson, Marcus di Rollo, Simon Taylor, Ross
Ford and Darren Burns.
The Scots, whose solitary victory in the main competition came at the expense
of minnows Niue Island, will now play the Cook Islands in Sunday's bowl
semi-final after they beat Malaysia 52-0.
Kenya, having failed to secure a quarter-final place in the main competition on
points difference, tackled bowl opponents Trinidad and Tobago as they sought
some consolation.
After an error-strewn start, Kenya established a 14-0 interval lead, then
pulled effortlessly away to secure a 40-0 triumph.
The last quarter-final produced a South Seas 'derby' between Tonga and their
neighbours Niue Island, but Tonga took charge early on and built up an
effortless 26-0 interval lead, with Newcastle captain Epi Taione among their
try-scorers.
Tonga ran out 59-5 winners, meaning that the victorious bowl quarter-finalists
had registered a staggering 208 points, while conceding just five.
