Jatinder Singh is out to salvage pride.
SINGH OUT TO SALVAGE ENGLISH PRIDE
By Jason Hughes, PA International
Jatinder Singh will today lead England's bid to revive their wrestling medal
fortunes after their dismal opening to the programme at the Commonwealth Games.
The Wolverhampton wrestler was the only English competitor to survive the
first day of action at Manchester's G-Mex Centre.
Andy Hutchinson, John Melling and Amerjit Singh - all medallists from Victoria
eight years ago - went out from their respective elimination pools.
England will also be hoping for better performances today when Paul Stridgeon,
Nathanael Ackerman and Johannes Rossouw join the fray in the 60kg, 74kg and 96kg
categories, respectively.
And Hutchinson, who lost two of his three bouts in the 55kg class, believes
his team-mates can regain some pride for English wrestling.
"Jatinder has had a good few rounds and if he can continue to carry that
momentum then he has a great chance and could go all the way," said the
Barnsley-born wrestler.
"We have a good line-up going today and it is up to them to forget about what
happened yesterday and move forward."
Jatinder will line up in the semi-final of the 84kg against either Nicholas
Ugoalah, Sinivie Boltic or Anuj Kumar.
Scotland also had a miserable start to competition with only Douglas Thomson
making it through the first day.
The Greenock wrestler beat Amerjit in the final bout and will now face Mushtaq
Rasem Abdullah of Australia in a straight battle for the bronze in the 120kg
category.
"It will be a challenging fight, the Aussie guy is very hot" said Thomson.
"But I'm still in with a shout and that's better than being out."
