MADASMY FAILS DRUGS TEST
Indian weightlifter Krishnan Madasamy has been disqualified from the men's
under-62kg division after testing positive for a banned substance.
Madasamy has been stripped of the three silver medals he won in his division
after his sample showed higher than acceptable levels of 19-Norandrosterone,
which is a metabolite of nandrolone.
He was interviewed by the Games medical commission on Saturday morning, when it was
decided that he had a case to answer.
And when the Games' federation court convened to review the
case and hear from the athlete, neither Madasamy nor his representatives could
"provide any evidence of information to explain the presence of this substance
in his body", said a statement.
Marcus Stephen of Nauru has moved into the silver medal position in the
division.
Roswadi Rashid of Malaysia and New Zealand's Terry Hughes move into the medal
positions, with the former winning bronze in the snatch (115kg) and the latter
claiming third place in the clean and jerk (135kg) and combined (245kg).
Michael Fennell, chairman of the Games Federation, said: "As we said at the
outset of the Games, the Federation is committed to drug-free sport.
"This is the most comprehensive anti-doping programme ever undertaken at the
Commonwealth Games and sends a clear message to any athlete contemplating the
use of prohibited substances."
