  • ROGER BANNISTER: Bannister had lost his mile World Record to Aussie John Landy but beat his arch-rival in a famous revenge race at Vancouver when both dipped below the four minute mark.

  • PRECIOUS McKENZIE: Weightlifter won the bantamweight division in 1978 to join an elite group of competitors who had struck gold in four Commonwealth Games.

  • DALEY THOMPSON: Thompson earnt his first gold at the 1978 Games, repeated the feat four years later, and added his third gold in 1986.

  • BARRY McGUIGAN: The youngest member of the Northern Irish team at 17, the `Clones Cyclone' won gold in the bantamweight class and help to sooth some of the divisions back home in trouble-torn Belfast.

  • SALLY GUNNELL: Gunnell took the first of her five golds in 1986 when she won the 100m hurdles in Edinburgh and followed that up in 1990 with success in the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay. She repeated her double victory of four years earlier in 1994.

  • SUE ROLPH: Swimmer Sue Rolph beat Aussie legend Susie O'Neill in 1998 to win gold in the 100m freestyle to add to her 50m title. The 1998 double success took her tally of golds to three as she had helped England's 4x200m relay team to victory in 1994.
