HALL STARS FOR ENGLAND
By Carl Markham, PA Sport
Four goals from Guildford forward Danny Hall secured fifth place for England
in a match which was in the balance up until the last six minutes.
It was still a disappointing end to the tournament as the host nation had set
themselves the target of at least achieving a medal.
But the players stuck to their task after missing a penalty stroke in the
first 90 seconds and then immediately conceding a goal.
England started brightly and won a stroke in the second minute when James
Wallis' shot hit a defender's stick and bounced up into his body in front of
goal.
Unfortunately, with regular penalty taker Dave Mathews ruled out of action for
up to six weeks with a hamstring tear, captain Craig Parnham stepped up and sent
Jon Mackinnon the wrong way but saw his shot rebound to safety off a post.
The miss was compounded when Canada broke swiftly down the left and when the
cross came over Ken Pereira shot home.
In the 11th minute England hit the equaliser when Loughborough's Jerome Goudie
jinked into the D and saw his shot deflected into the path of Hall who blasted
home from 10 yards.
England began to gain control of the game and they went in front nine minutes
before half-time with a well-executed penalty corner.
Parnham played the ball forward for Duncan Woods to stop and Hall ran in to
net his and England's second.
However, they appeared to lose their concentration at the beginning of the
second half and from a failed penalty corner Canada broke down the other end.
Although Lewis made a good save from Pereira's initial shot, he could only get
a slight hand to the reverse-stick follow-up as it flew into the net.
Both sides were reduced to 10 men as Jon Wyatt and Ranjeev Deol were
sin-binned for a touch of handbags by the sideline, but it was England who coped
better.
And 16 minutes from the end a double slip left from a penalty corner saw
Surbiton's Billy Waugh fire across Mackinnon into the far corner.
But Lewis had further misfortune in the 60th minute when, from Canada's first
penalty corner, he could only deflect Wayne Fernandes' low flick into the roof
of the net.
England responded immediately and Wallis picked out Reading's Mark Pearn on
the left of the D and he blasted home.
The result was wrapped up with a classy touch from Hall.
Woods crossed from the right and, having run ahead of the ball, Hall left his
stick dangling behind him, managed to connect and saw the ball trickle over the
line.
There was still time for Lewis to concede a penalty stroke and then redeem
himself by denying Rob Short his 100th international goal.
