McGEE WITHDRAWS FROM ROAD RACE
By Scott Dougal, PA International
Tour de France stage winner Brad McGee has pulled out of Saturday's
Commonwealth Games road race with a viral infection.
The Francaise des Jeux rider, who beat Bradley Wiggins of England to the gold
medal in the individual pursuit on Wednesday night, was diagnosed with the
illness earlier that day but still felt able to compete.
However, his condition has since worsened and he will be replaced by Luke
Roberts, a member of the team pursuit squad that broke the world record last
night.
Australia head coach Shayne Bannan has every confidence in Roberts as a
suitable replacement for McGee, saying: "He's been in fantastic form all
year."
The Australian team still retains two Tour veterans in Stuart O'Grady and
Baden Cooke and also features the trio that swept the board in the time trial
last Saturday - Cadel Evans, Michael Rogers and Nathan O'Neill.
