QUEALLY PLOTS AUSSIE DOWNFALL
By Scott Dougal, PA International
Jason Queally believes the camaraderie in the English camp will win out over
Australian aggression in tonight's team sprint.
Queally, together with Andy Slater and Jamie Staff, were the fastest
qualifiers for the second round - completing the three laps in 45.192 seconds,
marginally ahead of the Australians who finished in 45.571.
The men in green and gold swept the medal placings in the individual event,
inspiring silver winner Sean Eadie to claim the the English sprinters lacked the
aggression needed to compete at the highest level.
Queally - an Olympic gold medallist in the 1km time trial - agrees, but
insists that will count against the Aussies tonight.
"A lot of us are not true sprinters," he admitted. "Usually the world's
best sprinters are very aggressive.
"There's a lot of infighting among the Australian sprinters. They're
constantly fighting for positioning on the team."
His comments were borne out by the performance of Eadie, Ryan Bayley and Jobi
Dajka who were denied top slot by a ragged-looking performance.
Dajka in particular looked disheartened as he held his head in the pits, but
with seven out of eight golds going the way of the Aussies there should be no
underestimating them.
Queally, however, is desperate to hear anything but 'Advance Australia Fair'.
"Either us or the Scots, that's what I'm hoping for," he said.
The Scottish team were third fastest, finishing in 46.149. They raced without
Craig McLean who won Olympic silver for Britain with Queally and Chris Hoy in
the team event in Sydney.
MacLean, who broke his collarbone racing in Japan earlier this year, fell
badly in the minor final for the individual sprint placings and is still sore.
However, the 31-year-old will be back when the real battle commences this
evening.
"We've got four rides today - this is just the qualifying - we'll be turning
it on tonight," said team manager Alasdair MacLennan.
He pulled a tactical surprise by placing time trial winner Chris Hoy in the
second rather than third and final slot.
Scotland's first meeting will be with sixth fastest Malaysia while England go
up against Trinidad and Tobago.
Australia face South Africa while what promises to be a tight contest between
New Zealand and Canada will decide the other tie.
