DOHERTY DISTRAUGHT AFTER DEFEAT
By Mark Staniforth, PA Sport
Tony Doherty claimed a controversial elbow cost him his dream of a
welterweight medal at Wythenshawe Forum on Wednesday.
The feisty Welshman lasted just over one minute into his quarter-final with
Namibia's Ali Nuumbembe before he sustained a nasty cut in the corner of his
right eye and the contest was stopped by the doctor.
Doherty, one of the favourites for gold after beating England's Daniel Happe
in the first round, insisted: "He caught me with his elbow right on the bone.
"I can't believe this outcome. If the referee had seen it the guy would
definitely have been disqualified.
"I've spent my whole career training for this and I was more than confident
of winning a gold medal.
"They could at least have let me carry on for two more minutes. I've trained
so hard and it's all gone down the drain."
Scot Colin McNeil, bronze medallist four years ago, also went out when he was
outclassed 19-3 by excellent South African Kwanele Zulu.
McNeil walked into a right uppercut which earned him a standing count in the
second round and shortly afterwards the contest was stopped.
The Fauldhouse man, his team's biggest medal hope, said: "I had a funny
feeling that I was down but what can you do about the judges? I thought the
15-point rule might have worked in my favour."
Londoner Tony Cesay, representing Sierra Leone, missed out on a medal when he
was beaten 25-13 by Australian Daniel Geale.
